What is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)?

Voice over Internet Protocol is simply the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks.

Why the change to VoIP?

This new VoIP system will replace the aging phone systems across campuses. The solution will allow centralized management of voice services, improved fiscal management of voice services, a reduction of operating costs over time, and a advanced features to our users.

Will this new system affect my computer?

No. Even though your new phone and your computer may use the same wall jack, the transmission of your phone calls and network data will be separate.

Will I need a new telephone set?

Yes. The new VoIP system will require a different phone set. As departments are transitioned to VoIP, we will replace existing legacy phones with a new VoIP phone at no charge. Any additional phones added will be subject to charges.

Will my telephone service be disrupted if the network goes down?

Yes, if the network is down, your VoIP phone will go down as well. As departments are transitioned to VoIP, we will work with you to identify critical areas in your department that need voice communications in the event of a network outage. In those locations we will deploy Digital phone sets that do not rely on the network.

Will the VoIP phones work during a power failure?

No. As departments are transitioned to VoIP, we will work with you to identify critical areas in your department that need voice communications in the event of a power outage. In those locations we will deploy Digital phone sets that will operate off of centralized Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems.

Will I get a new phone number?
